Financial Holiday Tips

During the holidays, money is exchanged in the form of cash, credit cards and online shopping. With so much to do in so little time it may be hard to keep track of your spending habits. However, you should make it a priority to organizing your spending in order to have a financially safe holiday season. Make shopping a smooth process with these simple tips.

1. Organize a Budget

The first step you should do is create a budget. Once a budget is put into place make sure to monitor your account balances and credit limits. It is typical during the holidays for banks to increase your credit limit. With this in mind, make sure to know your limit as well as spend wisely.

2. Prep for Travel

Many people travel far distances over the holidays. Communicate to your bank if you plan to use your credit card in a different location. According to financial journalist Sherry Sitton, "this will prevent your bank from flagging your account for possible fraud and preventing access to your funds."

3. Credit Cards

Many credit cards have updated their security systems against identify fraud with a special chip. Now, instead of swiping your credit card you insert your credit card chip first. If you haven't received a new credit card with this feature it would be in your best interest to do so before next year.

4. Debit Cards

If you plan to use a debit card this holiday make sure to know where it is at all times. Using a debit card can help you control your spending habits, however debit cards can easily be accessed by thieves. An easy tip to abide by is keeping your PIN number hidden.

5. Mobile Banking

Many banks have apps that allow easy access to your bank accounts. Mobile Banking enables safer spending by giving consumers the ability to instantly verify transactions and identify fraud or abuse. Plus, having your account with you on the go will help you keep to your budget.

6. Online Payments

Online shopping gets more popular each year, but paying online means more people are able to access your financial information. Updating passwords makes it less likely that someone will steal your information or that your information will be leaked.
