Florida Students are not using Millions in Financial Aid

Students all over America get aid from the government every year to fund college, and many students would not be able to get such an education if it was not for federal aid and filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Then why is it that some students do not even bother to fill out the form?

A recent study found that just in Florida alone more than $100 million of federal aid for college goes unclaimed. The aid that is not being utilized is called a Pell Grant, and unlike other aid these grants to not need to be paid back.

Some reasons for all this unclaimed aid is that, the FAFSA is thought to be a difficult form to fill out because of all the financial and personal details of parent's and student's lives it asks for. However, it is rather easy to fill out the FAFSA form now that it is an online application. Another reason for students not filing out the form is due to the belief that only low-income families will qualify for aid, which is completely untrue. Aid depends on many factors, not solely income. FASFA also is beneficial to fill out because it gives students who qualify the chance for work study, which helps pay for school, and FAFSA is an outlet toward federal loans.

To promote students to fill out the FAFSA form schools all over Florida are consistently sending out reminders to the students about FAFSA and its benefits. Florida schools have set a goal of increasing the amount of Pell Grants received by Florida graduates by $10 million this year. Federal student aid is very important to anyone in college; with the amount of unused aid in Florida, all students should fill out the form, because there is no harm in trying to gain money to attend school.
