Tips on Disputing Errors on Your Credit Report

Errors on credit report are common occurrences. You might be someone who is affected by these mistakes on your report and you do not even realize it. Having a credit report error is very serious, and could severely hinder someone's credit score. It only takes one error on a report to lower your credit score and then end up paying thousands of dollars on high interest payments.

Here are some tips to keep track, and dispute errors if they are on credit reports:

1. Review your credit reports. You can do this by going to AnnualCreditReport.com and simply answer a few questions and enter personal information. If you have never seen any of your credit reports, you should get review all possible reports. However, if you have check your credit report before, be sure to check every few months to make sure errors do not occur. When reviewing your credit reports, go through them carefully, making sure not to miss any errors that might be listed, such as incorrect account numbers, identity errors, or false accounts.

2. Make sure you have documentation to support your dispute. If you find an error, the only way you have a chance of correcting it is if you have proof of the mistake. When trying to fix an error always provide documents that prove you do actually have an error on your credit report.

3. Send a letter to credit bureaus to make your dispute.

4. Make copies of the marked up credit report containing errors, all documents that support your dispute, and the letter written to the bureaus.

5. Send your dispute along with evidence, and request a receipt so you know when your dispute makes it to the credit bureaus. If your dispute is successful, you will be notified by the provider and they will also notify the credit bureaus so that the error can be corrected on your reports.

6. What to do if dispute is denied? This may be due to multiple factors:

· Your dispute was not an error. The only way to fix a negative mark on a credit report is to build credit by making on time, regular payments.

· You may not have enough proof to support dispute, and bureaus can deny to investigate your claim. You can always try again with more supporting documents.

Even if you make a dispute and it is corrected, errors can still show up. Remember to continuously check credit reports for fraud and errors. If you have a good credit score you will feel more financially stable and less worried about debt.
