Sports Authority Hangs on By a Thread

1024px-Sports_Authority_DC_exterior.jpg

Sports Authority was once a large, vast village of sports related merchandise. Sorted by sport and brand and color and price, if you wanted something in the athletic realm and Sports Authority didn't have it, you may have no other options in sight. However, what was once the royalty of the sports themed retailers has since become a sad warehouse of unpurchased merchandise that is costing more to keep in stock than the number of consumers who are purchasing. Sports Authority has been on the trail to bankruptcy since March and has since been falling deeper and deeper into its own demise.

While other retailers who have gone into bankruptcy such as Aeropostale and Pacsun argue that their target demographic just isn't interested anymore, Sports Authority doesn't have this problem. In the past couple years healthy eating and working out has grown tremendously and has become a major trend in the market. No, Sports Authority's problem seems to be that it is too diversified and that it doesn't offer the experience and appeal that brand name retailers offer.

Sports Authority must compete with retailers like Nike, Lululemon and Under Armor for the customers they once attracted. The difference between these stores and Sports Authority is that they offer more than just walls and racks with various colored sports shoes and running jackets; they offer engagement like no other retailers can. They have technology in the form of applications and health monitoring, they offer community in the form of engagement groups and classes, and they offer customization in many of their products online.

Sports Authority had the right idea when beginning bankruptcy: liquidate merchandise from unsuccessful stores and try to make up for profit in other sectors, however with the competition so steep Sports Authority may be hanging on by a thread.
