Class of 2016 Breaks Record for Student Debt

This spring, college graduates find themselves holding the record of highest student debt to date. However, there is some good news. Although student debt is at an intimidating high, research is showing that this year graduates are expected to make higher starting salaries. This means, students of the 2016 class are likely to pay off their student debt faster than the students that graduated before them.

"Students are expected to graduate with an average of $37,172 in student debt as they enter the workforce," according to higher-education expert, Mark Kantrowitz. As large as the debt may seem, most graduates have been receiving starting salaries that are larger than the debt that they owe. On top of that, "the unemployment rate of recent college grads is at a low 4.6%," according to the New York Fed.

Spring is about new beginnings and it looks as if the student debt issue has become slightly better. Unlike in the past, students that are currently entering the real world will be able to handle the debt they racked up due to college. It also looks like recent grads are more likely to receive a job and be able to pay down their debt at a faster rate than the students before them.

According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, "Americans who earned a bachelor's degree last year landed a job with an average starting salary of $50,651." Each year the starting salary increases, which means that those that borrow money to pay their student loans may actually be able to remove themselves from the infamous student loan issue.
