Facts on Filling out FAFSA

facts-on-filling-out-fafas-02.jpg

Students that are planning to attend college for the first time have a long to-do list. A student's main priority should be applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Since the deadline is coming soon, now is the time to apply. Below you will find some facts that can guide you through the FAFSA process.

All Students Should Apply

FAFSA is for students going to college for the first time as well as students who are returning to college. Each student needs to fill out the FAFSA in order to receive federal financial aid and also the ability to appeal a college's financial aid office. According to Jodi Okun, founder of College Financial Aid Advisors, "The biggest mistake families make is not filling out the FAFSA."

When to Submit

The best time to submit is by February or early March. To find out exact dates you should check with your school's financial aid office. Be aware that some aid is on a first-come, first served basis so applying early is in your best interest.

How to Proceed

For free, you can go to fafsa.gov and fill out the FAFSA application. In order to begin the process, you must sign up for a FSA ID. The ID can be found at fsaid.ed.gov. This is a new feature that replaced the old four-digit personal identification number. Families should also make sure that they have all the proper documents ready for filling out the application such as their 2015 tax return.

Additional Financial Aid

Many universities offer grants and scholarships. To apply for these funds, see the CSS/Financial Aid Profile at student.collegeboard.org. Some exceptions apply and there may also be fees for applying to multiple schools.
