How to get help from medical debt

medical bills.jpg

Debt of almost any kind is bad. However, just about everybody in America, including many in the Tampa area, have some kind of debt. At Timothy J Sierra, we know that debt can lead to many forms of financial trouble, and in extreme cases can lead a person to consider filing for bankruptcy. We also know that while many people have mortgage and credit card debt, medical debt is another severe problem in America.

In fact, according to an article from MainStreet.com, medical debt is actually the leading cause of people filing for bankruptcy claims in the United States. The article also points out that according to NerdWallet.com, every year Americans fork over three times as much money in third-part collections from medical debt, than they pay in credit card or bank debt combined. In 2012 alone, collectors took in $21 billion in medical debt from American consumers.

However, before you choose bankruptcy, there are some steps you can take to help you stay afloat with medical debt, according to an article in U.S. News & World Report. First, it's important to keep very detailed records of all of your medical bills and other paperwork. Insurance companies and medical billing staff often make mistakes, and it's up to you to find them.

You can also help yourself a lot by having a detailed knowledge and understanding of your insurance policy. This can help you find any errors or overcharges. It's also a good idea to pay your bills on time. Take the time to examine them closely but don't put payment off too long.

It's a good idea to consider all of your payment options, including using a flexible spending account or a health savings account. Lastly, if you reach a breaking point, so-to-speak, then you might need to consider bankruptcy as an option.
