Americans are still buried in Medical Debt

When a patient goes to the hospital for a procedure they are aware that there will be cost and payments due for the medical attention they have received. These patients are usually able to sort out the cost of their medical bills due to insurance or payment plans. However, what patients do not put into account are the unexpected medical costs that are added on to medical bills, this is what sends patients into debt. More than 63% of Americans receive medical bills higher than what they expected after medical treatment.

Medical debt is on the rise in America and about 40% of Americans owe money to collectors for pervious medical concerns. According to NerdWallet, a financial advice company, medical bankruptcy is the leading cause for those who file personal bankruptcy in the United States. Americans owe more in medical bills than credit card debt or payments owed to banks. Some reasons for higher medical costs and debt are: billing mistakes for medical care and the fact that hospitals widely vary in their costs for the same medical procedure.

The newly expanded Medicaid and Affordable Care Act this past year can help ease debtors' financial issues due to medical bills. In Florida particularly, it expanded health care for children from the ages 6 to 18, allowing a broader range of medical care at a more affordable price to their families. The health care was previously granted to children under 6 years of age. However, for those Americans that do not qualify for federal health care, their best chance is to research hospital charges prior, which is difficult when someone is in an emergency situation.

If you are someone who is suffering from medical bills and find yourself at a standstill on how to get out of debt, contact and experienced attorney who will guide you to a finically stable life for you and your loved ones.
