Mortgage and credit card debt reducing for many Floridians

Good job, Floridians! CreditKarma.com and other consumer agencies have reported a decrease in harmful credit card spending habits in our state, while in other areas of the country, credit card spending is on the rise. In Florida, millions of consumers continue to chip away at their credit card debt, reduce their monthly payments, and ultimately pave the way toward a more solid financial footing.

Since Florida was among the states hit the hardest during the Great Recession, this is news to be especially proud of. It also could be the reason so many Florida residents continue to make wise decisions regarding their credit: They remember those difficult times, and are cautious to keep control of their spending habits and avoid financial problems.

In May, credit card debt in some parts of the state fell 16 percent from this time last year. The average credit card balance is $4,798, compared to $5,731 last year. However, in many other parts of the country, people are on track to add about $47 billion in new credit card debt by the end of the year.

Consumer agencies are reporting that Floridians are also managing their mortgages and student loans well, lowering the balances and staying in control. Many people in our state are well on their way to turning around bad credit scores. Some may still need some extra help with debt relief, and that’s why it can help to speak with a bankruptcy attorney about additional options that are affordable and allow consumers to rebuild credit without completely destroying their credit score.
